WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY
This beginner lesson on work tasks starts with a warm-up. Students say what they usually do at different times and on different days (e.g. Monday 11 a.m.). Afterwards, they match sentence halves to create phrases related to daily work routines and habits (e.g. take notes, do work tasks, start my workday). Then, students label pictures using the phrases they created. Moving on, they choose the correct verbs to complete sentences related to workday and schedule (e.g. I always take/start/reply notes in meetings). Students then change five sentences so that they are true about them or the people they know. They also add details and examples.
VIDEO AND DISCUSSION
In this part of this beginner lesson on work tasks, students read a definition of a software engineer and watch the first part of a video (to 00:42) showing a day in that job. Next, they choose what the speaker discusses. Students then pick the correct options to finish sentences. Following that, they watch the first part of the video again and check their answers. Afterwards, students rewrite the sentences from the previous task to make them true about themselves. They give details. Moving on, students watch the second part of the video (05:17-05:51) where the speaker talks about the end of her workday. Students put tasks in the order she mentions them. After that, they discuss work routines. Finally, in pairs, students compare work-related situations (e.g. answer calls all day OR read documents all day), decide which one is worse and explain why.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps with the correct form of verbs in a text about a person’s workday. They then write a short text about their workday. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
