LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this worksheet are to:

  • learn and practise basic animal vocabulary;
  • discuss animals and personal experiences;
  • identify animals by listening to recordings.

With this worksheet, students talk about animals, where they live and which ones make good pets. They explore vocabulary for animals (e.g. goldfish, cow, lion), read a text about farm animals and listen to animal sounds. Students also share personal experiences and opinions about animals and play games where they guess animals and complete animal-themed challenges

This is a Vocabulary Lab worksheet. With it, students are introduced to a set of vocabulary on a specific topic and practise it through controlled activities, speaking tasks and games. Learn more about it here.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This worksheet starts with a warm-up. Students add more places to a list of where animals live. After that, they explore basic animal vocabulary. Students guess animals (e.g. rabbit, bird, cat) from their descriptions. Moving on, they discuss questions about having animals as pets. Afterwards, students read a text about animals living on a farm and label pictures with the names of the animals mentioned (e.g. goat, horse, pig). Next, they look at the words and pictures of more animals (e.g. elephant, frog, snake), and find mistakes. Students then listen to a recording and check. Following that, they listen to the sounds of animals and say which animal makes each sound

VOCABULARY PRACTICE AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the worksheet, students work in pairs and practise basic animal vocabulary. Student A picks a card and reads out the task (e.g. name three animals that can live in a tree). Student B names the animals and Student A says if they are correct. They swap roles and continue until they use all the cards. After that, students work in pairs again. They think of an animal from the worksheet. Their partner asks them questions to guess what animal it is. Then, students switch roles. Following that, they discuss questions where they share thoughts and experiences with animals.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This worksheet also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete animal names with the missing letters. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
