LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson about loneliness, students get the opportunity to practise word formation and reflect on changes in their relationships with friends.

30 minCritical Reading ClubUnlimited Plan

This is a Critical Reading Club worksheet. With this format, students need to read an online article at home and do the exercises in the classroom. Learn more about how to use such worksheets and their benefits in our post.

ACTIVITIES

Having read an article about the growing problem of loneliness, students engage in a  brief discussion about the role of friends in their lives. They read three statements about friends and decide whether they consider them true or false for themselves and their own lives. Next, they look at eight words from the article (adjectives and verbs) and have to change them into nouns adding appropriate noun suffixes (e.g. anxious-anxiety, reject-rejection, permanent-permanence). Their next task is to discuss how the newly formed nouns might be connected to loneliness and friendship. The discussion continues and students share their answers to five more questions related to the lesson theme. Finally, students look at a list of things people typically do with friends. They relate them to their own experiences and discuss what feelings these actions evoke in them. Encourage your students to add more examples to the list.

You can get your own editable copy of an e-lesson plan and make changes to it. To do so, either (1) make a copy of it on your Google Drive (preferable method) or (2) download it in a Powerpoint format (but formatting might be a bit off so we can’t guarantee that it will work well).
