| LESSON OVERVIEW
Thanks to our flipped lesson plan on gardening, students will learn a few verbs, watch a video about turning lawns into gardens as well as discover the meanings of some expressions with the word ‘green’.
This is a Flipped Classroom lesson plan. In a nutshell, it means that the first part of the lesson needs to be done by students at home. Learn more about flipped classroom and how we implement it in these lesson plans in our post.
PRE-CLASS ACTIVITIES
First, in the pre‐class worksheet students learn a few verbs related to gardening (e.g. fertilize, mow, irrigate). They have to read sentences and choose correct meanings of the verbs in bold. Next, they need to write their own sentences to practise them a bit. After that, students move to the first listening comprehension task. They watch a part of the video and complete some notes about American lawns. Then, they watch the second part of the video and complete information about front-yard gardens and the idea of turning lawns into gardens where you can grow food.
IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
Discussion and Vocabulary
The in‐class worksheet starts with a discussion about gardening, the idea presented in the video and students’ own attitude towards growing own food. In the next task, we want to show students that the verbs they’ve learnt beforehand can also be used in different contexts. Therefore, students have to complete sentences with the correct forms of the verbs, and find out how these verbs might also be used. Then, they need to choose five verbs and write a short story with them. When they finish writing, tell them to exchange their stories in pairs and check whether the verbs have been used correctly.
‘Green’ expressions
Finally, this lesson plan on gardening ends with a vocabulary extension where students learn a few expressions with the word ‘green’. This section includes the following words and expressions: be green, greens, green thumb/green fingers, greenery, give the green light to something, go green. First, students match the underlined words and expressions to the correct meanings, and then discuss them and say whether they agree or disagree with them.

Which country doesn’t allow its citizens to have a garden without a special permission?
That was the case of Florida 🙂 People had to fought for the right to grow vegetable gardens there. You can read more about it here.
