WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson plan on saving money starts with a warm-up. Students look at the lesson title and make predictions on what they are going to learn and discuss in the lesson. Then, students complete the sentences with the correct prepositions (e.g. spend money on, borrow money from, cut down on). After that, they look at a list of things (e.g. grocery shopping, clothes, holidays) and say what they spend the most on. Next, students move to the quiz about spending habits. They read the quiz and match words and phrases (e.g. charge, items, overspend, buy on impulse) to their meanings. After that, they take the quiz and choose answers that represent their spending habits. When finished, they can also try to analyse what the answers they’ve chosen might say about their spending habits.

VIDEO & DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson plan on saving money, students watch the video about tips on how to save money on daily expenses. First, students watch the first part of the video about grocery shopping and meal planning and do a multiple-choice task. Then, students predict what the next tip will be about and check the second part of the video. Students watch the third part of the video and answer the question about saving money on entertainment. After the video, students discuss the questions about the tips and share their opinions as well as experiences. At the end of this lesson plan on saving money, students fill in the gaps with words from the box to revise the vocabulary and discuss the given sentence.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson plan on saving money also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students correct the mistakes in the target vocabulary. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

Is it only me who cannot access the video?

    1. Stan

It works fine on our end. The embed is pretty bad because the website where the interactive video is hosted have some bugs. You can watch the video directly on their website using this link: https://eslbrains.com/interactive-saver-spender

  13. Алина Никишина

Thanks for the class! I have doubts. Why is there “keep myself on budget”, not “on a budget”?

    1. Justa

Actually, both forms are OK. You can check them out here. I feel the meaning is slightly different though. When we say ‘on a budget’, we mean with a restricted amount of money, e.g. travel on a budget; whereas ‘on budget’ is more about not using more money than planned. You can check some examples of different uses here and here.

I recommend adding the video from YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH_JLA-fkBY
The link in the lesson has so many adds.
    Thank you!

    1. Justa

We prepared the video in this lesson to be interactive, so students watch it and answer the questions that appear on the screen. If we changed the link, the teacher would need to ask the questions and it would be less convenient.

  18. aaelizalde

Hello! something is wrong with the video, I couldn’t access it today and I just accessed it a few days ago. Could you please help me?

    1. Justa

Hi! Just to let you know, we needed to update the lesson as the original video disappeared. You can enjoy it again now 🙂

Is there a minimum subscription period if I choose a monthly subscription?

No, there's no minimum required number of subscription months. You can cancel any time you want. Basically, you can sign up and then cancel your subscription the next day, which will mean you have access for 1 month and won't be charged again.

What currencies can I pay in for my subscription?

Our default currency is USD (American dollar), but you can also pay in EUR (euro), GBP (British pound sterling) or PLN (Polish zloty). You can change the currency you want to pay in at the Pricing page before selecting a subscription plan.

How can I edit an e-lesson plan?

You can get your own editable copy of an e-lesson plan and make changes to it. To do so, either (1) make a copy of it on your Google Drive (preferable method) or (2) download it in a Powerpoint format (but formatting might be a bit off so we can’t guarantee that it will work well).
