LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • read and discuss an article about real-life superheroes;
  • learn vocabulary to talk about acts of kindness and good conduct;
  • talk about specific activities and opinions on community action.

With this lesson, students discuss an article about ‘real life superheroes’, i.e. people who help and protect the community out of civic duty. Students discuss varying opinions on the idea, as well as other acts of kindness. They learn vocabulary for the topic (e.g. make a difference, keep the peace). They also discuss specific activities, as well as looking at case studies of more real-life superheroes.

ACTIVITIES

Students begin the lesson with a warm-up, in which they look at everyday acts of kindness strangers do for each other, and discuss some questions. After that, students learn the target vocabulary by reading statements and finding the correct definition for phrases (e.g. do good, hand out, etc.). Next, students use the phrases they’ve learned to say what they remember about the article they read in preparation for the lesson. Students then discuss some questions about the article and share their thoughts on the concept of real-life superheroes. Following that, students read some case studies about more real-life superheroes and discuss questions about them. Afterwards, they look at some real-life superhero activities (e.g. preventing bullying, cleaning up public parks, etc). They explain which they’d rather do, the advantages and disadvantages of each, and how they would carry out each one in real life. The lesson ends with an interview task. Students take turns playing a superhero and an interviewer, using the questions provided and their own ideas.
