This ESL lesson focuses on business competition vocabulary through learning about unusual business ideas. Students learn useful phrases, watch a video, and discuss business cases.

WARM-UP & VOCABULARY
The lesson starts with a warm-up activity. Students decide how important different things (e.g. an interesting concept, online reviews, etc.) are for them when choosing a restaurant. After that, students move on to work on business competition vocabulary. First, they read about unusual cafes and match the phrases in bold (e.g. play safe, knock it out of the park, enhance customer retention, etc.) to their definitions. Students then discuss the texts and say whether they would like to visit any of the places and whether the cafes would be popular where they live. Students also touch upon the topic of why people nowadays look for something beyond food when they choose the place to eat.
VIDEO & CASE STUDIES
In this part of the lesson, students watch a video and practise the business competition vocabulary. Before students watch the video, they read comments about an unusual restaurant and guess what its concept might be about. Then, they watch the first part of the video and check their ideas. Students watch the second part of the video and answer some questions. Before the final part of the video, students do some brainstorming. First, they look at some things the waiters at the restaurant say to customers and think of ways to respond. Students also think about the challenges the waiters might face. Then, students watch the third part of the video and check their ideas. After that, students discuss the questions and talk about the restaurant and other interesting business ideas. At the end of the lesson, students work with case studies and discuss the pros and cons of the ideas.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students practise the use of business competition vocabulary from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
