Thanks to this pre‐intermediate Business English lesson plan, students will learn useful words and phrases for describing companies and jobs.
DESCRIBING COMPANIES
The worksheet starts with a quick speaking activity. Students look at the list of companies (e.g. Ikea, Apple, Nike, etc.) and say whether they know them and have their products. Next, they study a box with a few verbs (specialise, produce, include, employ, design, etc.) and say what these verbs mean. Once the meaning of the verbs is clear, students move to another exercise. They read a few sentences about different companies and have to complete them with the correct pairs of verbs. To practise the verbs, students discuss questions and talk about companies they work for using the verbs they’ve learnt.
DESCRIBING JOBS
The next part of this pre‐intermediate Business English lesson plan is about students’ jobs and responsibilities. First, they read a questionnaire and match words and phrases in bold to their meanings. After checking the answers, students discuss the questionnaire. Depending on your class, you could ask students to work in pairs, make notes about their partner’s job and then, say what they do in their job. In the next exercise, students learn that the verb ‘work’ goes with a few prepositions (e.g. in, for, on) by matching halves to create correct phrases. Then, to practise all the vocabulary from this lesson plan, students read a short text about someone’s company and job and choose correct words. The goal of this exercise is to check whether students understand verbs as well as prepositions that they’ve learnt thanks to this worksheet. Finally, students prepare a short description of their company and their job. You may do that in a form of a writing or speaking task.
