WARM-UP & VIDEO

At the beginning of the lesson, students look at three photos of New York and try to guess what city it is and what the places are called. They also discuss what the city is famous for and why it attracts people. Then, students read three quotations about New York and discuss which of them they think are true. Before watching the video, students look at one more quote and think what it might mean. Then, they watch the video and check their answers. Before the second viewing, students read seven sentences and replace the words with those in the box (e.g. contemporary, extraordinary, vibrant). The words include adjectives to describe art. Then, students decide if the ideas from the statements were mentioned in the video. They check their answers during the second viewing. Finally, they discuss some questions about the video. They also talk about other cities which are known for their art scene, and about the art scene in their country.

ADJECTIVES TO DESCRIBE ART

In this part of the lesson, students read two descriptions of museums and decide which of them refers to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and which to The Museum of Modern Art. To help them do that, the teacher can show them the photos of the two museums. The links to the photos are provided in the worksheet. After that, students look at the descriptions again and words that fall into three categories: adjectives to describe art (e.g. classical, abstract), words for describing buildings (e.g. brand-new, accessible), words describing types of art (e.g. sketches, landscapes). Then, students move on to another speaking task and decide whether they agree with some statements and practise talking about art. Finally, students imagine that they are planning an art show. They have to describe it using several questions as a guide

I find this lesson to be a little bit too difficult for B1 students.

    1. Olia

We see your concern. This lesson works well with B2-level students, but it’s worth giving your stronger B1 students a shot. Especially if they find the topic interesting:)

Thank you for the lesson! Is it correct to say “amounts of tourists” though? I thought we should use the word “number” since it’s a countable noun

How can I edit an e-lesson plan?

You can get your own editable copy of an e-lesson plan and make changes to it. To do so, either (1) make a copy of it on your Google Drive (preferable method) or (2) download it in a Powerpoint format (but formatting might be a bit off so we can’t guarantee that it will work well).
