LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• discuss professions from different perspectives;
• practise vocabulary for professions;
• talk about preferences and experiences.

In this lesson, students reflect on occupations, work with job descriptions and explore words for professions (e.g. a guard, an engineer, a scientist). They discuss places where professionals usually go, share their job preferences and play a guessing game about professions. Students also discuss what individuals do and experience at work, talk about people they know and work in pairs, reading a problem and suggesting which professional can help.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students think of professions for different categories (e.g. a profession that someone in the class has). They then match descriptions with vocabulary for professions (e.g. a tour guide, a paramedic, an athlete). Afterwards, students think of a place where they can see each person from the previous exercise (e.g. you can see a tour guide at a museum). Following that, they look at different professions (e.g. lawyer, chef, courier) in sentences and match them with pictures connected to each job. Moving on, students look at the sentences from the previous task again (e.g. I would like to be a gardener because I like working outside). They say if they are true for them and add details. After that, students complete professions (e.g. soldier, mechanic, vet) with missing letters and say each word three times.

DISCUSSION AND VOCABULARY PRACTICE

In this part of the lesson, students work in pairs and get cards with professions. They either act it out, draw it or say related words so their partner can guess the profession. Students then switch roles and continue until all cards are used. Afterwards, they practise vocabulary for professions and complete the sentences (e.g. …sits a lot at work) with different professionals. Students explain their choice. Following that, they say if they know anyone who has varied professions and give details. Moving on, students answer questions about aspects of jobs (e.g. Which profession is the most interesting?) by choosing professions. Finally, they work in pairs and pick a card with a situation (e.g. someone stole your bike). Students read it and share the scenario with their partner. Their partner suggests a professional who can help. They then switch roles and pick a different card.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete sentences with pairs of words. They then create a sentence with one of the pairs. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
