LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson on like/love/hate + ing are to:

• learn and work on vocabulary for different activities;
• discuss personal preferences for holiday activities;
• practise like/love/hate + ing;
• watch a video about a family who travels in a campervan.

With this lesson, students share their holiday likes and dislikes. They practise vocabulary about holiday activities (e.g. spending time with friends, travelling, running, etc.), work on verbs to express preferences (like, love, hate) and explore spelling rules to create gerunds. Students watch a video about a family who travels in a campervan and talk about themselves and the people they know. They also work in pairs creating and answering questions about activities they like doing.  

WARM-UP AND GRAMMAR

This lesson on like/love/hate + ing starts with a warm-up. Students say things they think of when they hear the word ‘holiday’. After that, they read about what some people like doing on holiday and match the sentences with pictures of activities (e.g. swimming, visiting museums, hiking, etc.). Then, students write the activities under the correct pictures. Next, they discuss holiday activity preferences. Following that, students complete tasks. They explore verbs to express preference (love, like, don’t like and hate), complete gaps to create sentences and practice spelling rules for verbs ending in ‘-ing’ (e.g. camping, making, shopping, etc.). Afterwards, they complete gaps with ideas from pictures showing holiday activity preferences (e.g. My sister hates hiking.). Students then choose a sentence that is true for them or people they know and give details. If none are true, they change one to make it true.

VIDEO AND DISCUSSION

In this part of this lesson on like/love/hate + ing, students watch a video about people who travel in a campervan and choose the correct statements about them. Afterwards, they watch the video again and choose the words that are mentioned (e.g. camping, playing games, hiking, etc.). Then, students discuss questions about the family and their travel preferences. Following that, they choose one alternative in pairs of options (e.g. going on holiday with family OR going on holiday with friends) and add some details. Next, they create questions for their partner. Students ask if they or people they know like doing some activities. Finally, their partner answers their questions and gives them details. Then, students answer their partner’s questions and give details, using ‘like’, ‘love’, ‘doesn’t like’ or ‘hate’. 

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose the correct options to complete statements. Then, they add two lines to the dialogue. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
