What to do with the final five minutes of your ESL lesson?

As a language teacher, we’re guessing you’re no stranger to this awkward moment:

The lesson is about to end, you’ve covered the material, but you have five minutes left on the clock. It’s not enough to start something new, yet too long to wrap up early…⏲️

Don’t worry! We’ve got three creative solutions to transform those final moments into valuable learning time. 💯

👉How about a little revision?

A well-executed revision can work wonders to wrap up a lesson and doesn’t always require extensive prep. One simple approach is to ask your students what they liked the most in the lesson. Encourage them to use active vocabulary or target structures when explaining their choices. Alternatively, have them step into your shoes and predict how the discussion could continue if given more time. Who knows, you may even glean some inspiration for future classes! 😉

👉Make use of mistakes

Mistake analysis is another excellent option for those last few minutes. Use this time to analyse your students’ mistakes, either as a group or in pairs. Review the mistakes you’ve observed during the lesson, and encourage students to discuss and learn from them. Ask students to come up with sentence examples using the correct word/structure or even devise questions to ask their peers.

👉Guess what’s next!

If you’ve done both revision and mistake analysis and still have those tricky extra minutes, fuel your students’ excitement for the next class! Share a few keywords or a picture related to the upcoming lesson and ask them to guess what you’re going to do next time. It’s a great way to spark their curiosity and get them to look forward to the next class!

With these tips, you’ll make the most of every minute you have with your students and make your lesson planning a breeze. ✨
