LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- engage in talking about brands from different perspectives;
- learn the brand name and the common name for popular products;
- watch a video about brand names and common names.
In this lesson, students discuss brands, share their opinions and explore famous slogans. They evaluate brands by rating different points (e.g. quality, logo, slogan), talk about consumer habits and read a short text about the brand name and the common name for a product. Students watch a video about this topic, guess brand and common names of popular items and discuss their brand preferences in varied situations. They can also do an extra vocabulary task to review useful words and phrases (e.g. advert, no-name, quality) for the lesson.

This is a Speaking Class worksheet. It includes a variety of tasks that let your students practise their speaking skills. This lesson format does not focus on grammar or vocabulary. Learn more about it here.
WARM-UP AND DISCUSSION
Before the lesson starts, students can do a vocabulary activity. They complete the definitions of terms for talking about brands (e.g. brand, design, logo). Then, students use those terms to label parts of a logo with text and symbols. Afterwards, the lesson begins with a warm-up. Students look at different items (e.g. chocolate, shampoo, jeans) and answer questions, sharing opinions about brands. Moving on, they read famous slogans and guess which brands they belong to. After exploring the answers, students choose three slogans and explain why they think they are good. Following that, they pick a popular brand and evaluate it by ranking key factors (e.g. name, design, price). Students then say whether they agree with the opinions about brands and consumer habits.
VIDEO AND MORE DISCUSSION
In this part of the lesson, students continue talking about brands. They read a text about the difference between the brand name and the common name for a product. After that, students decide which words are brand names and which are common names (e.g. POPSICLE and ICE POP). Next, they watch a short video on the topic and check their ideas. Moving on, students guess more brand names and common names for different items (e.g. BAND-AID and PLASTER). Following that, they discuss questions about brand names becoming common words. Afterwards, students look at pairs of brand-related situations (e.g. a T-shirt from a local brand OR a T-shirt from an international brand) and decide which brand they would choose in each.
