speaking lesson on communities

Students watch the video to 02:25

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this speaking lesson on communities are to:

  • talk about communities from various perspectives;
  • watch a video segment exploring an eco-community;
  • read short texts about communities in different countries.

In this speaking lesson, students discuss community experiences, share their thoughts and watch part of a video (to 02:25) about an eco-community. They talk about eco-living, explore the pros and cons of eco-communities and discuss quotes. Students read about two communities and talk about their impact. They can also do an extra vocabulary activity to review useful phrases (e.g. respite from the hustle, fall short of covering living costs, be in tune with people).

VOCABULARY AND WARM-UP

Before this speaking lesson on communities starts, students can do an extra vocabulary activity. In the task, they create phrases related to ways of living (e.g. live off-grid, be resilient to stress, yearn for a nice house) by completing the gaps with a preposition. Then, students finish three sentences (e.g. If you yearn for a nice house in the country, save some money and…) with their own ideas. Then, they can begin the lesson with a warm-up. Students describe a memory that encapsulates being part of a community for them.  Afterwards, they choose an option to complete statements about perspectives on communities (e.g. Most/Few people value belonging to a community). Students provide details.

VIDEO AND DISCUSSION

In this part of this speaking lesson on communities, students watch part of a video about an eco-community and discuss questions about living in such communities. After that, they look at what some people from the community say in the video. Students share if any of the ideas resonate with them. Moving on, they list things in categories related to eco-community experiences (e.g. potential challenges of living in an eco-community). Students try not to mention points they talked about in previous tasks. They then discuss questions about eco-living and communities. Finally, students read about two communities and discuss questions about communities and social change.
