News for Classroom Use

Title separator

Students are more than eager to discuss current events, which you have reported to us in the recent survey. In response, we are going to help you introduce the news into your classroom. Keep reading to discover what we’ve come up with.🙂

You request – we provide!

We’re happy to introduce News for Classroom Use: a weekly post with a selected piece of news and activities based on it, which you can use as a warm-up, a filler or a wrap-up task. The posts include: the news summary, discussion questions, tasks around headlines and images, comments to respond to, glossaries, links to related ESL Brains lesson plans, and many more.

Where to find the posts

They are very easy to find! Just go to the menu tab called ‘News for Classroom Use’.

You’ll be taken to the page with the posts and you will find the most current news at the top. When browsing the posts, use the images to find the category that is likely to interest your students. Are they into Tech talk, Celebrity scoop or Culture vibes? Or perhaps they’d go for World explorer, Sports beat and Science buzz? Remember that the news covered in the posts range from breaking news to more evergreen content which you will be able to go back to according to your students’ needs.

How to use News for Classroom Use

The post has several parts:

SUMMARY: A short paragraph with the news which helps you decide if it’s something your students might be interested in. It’s also the text you read out to students and the activities below specify when to read it exactly.

ACTIVITIES: Tasks for students to work on. Each post contains a set of questions related to the news. You might ask students to discuss all of them or just some of them. Other activities include completing headlines, commenting on pictures or a short video, simple guessing games, reporting what students have heard about the news, etc.

EXTRA: Each post contains a link to an article in which the news is covered. Use it as a reference to learn more details if needed. Ask students to use the vocabulary from the glossary while talking about the news. The post might also provide a link to an ESL Brains lesson connected with the topic, which you might decide to follow up with.

  24. SheilaREC

This is really great – what I’m missing or can’t find is the CEFR Level for the news. Can you create it for different levels? Or at least specify the ones you share.
My students want to discuss the news!

    Thank you!

    1. Stan

Hi Sheila! We’re not adding any CEFR levels at this point as we only publish one version of them each time. Things may change in the future but to be on the safe side you should assume that these activities are for B2 (or higher) learners. Personally, I think some of the news items can be discussed with B1 students too but it all depends on your students 🙂
