Teaching new A2 students is both exciting and demanding. We understand the challenges of introducing pre-intermediate learners to the immersive world of ESL Brains.
Our authentic materials and interactive approach offer incredible opportunities for language growth, but they might appear a tad daunting to students at first.
Let us share some effective strategies that will ease your new A2 students into the ESL Brains experience while fostering confidence and enthusiasm.
Embrace the authenticity
Our lessons feature authentic videos which are often fast-paced, use slang and cultural references, and were not created with ESL learners in mind. Make sure your students know that! Tell them it’s OK if there are things they don’t understand and that being exposed to authentic language is the best way to learn to communicate.
Video comprehension made easy
To make it less challenging for students, play the video several times and slow it down if necessary. Re-play the parts they didn’t catch or turn the subtitles on. A great advantage of learning a language through videos is that visual elements on-screen very often make comprehension easier.
Building confidence in speaking
Our lessons contain a lot of speaking tasks, which students might find overwhelming at first, as many A2 students are not used to speaking in English extensively. Let students know that it’s OK if they start by saying just a bit more than ‘Yes’, ‘No’ or ‘I don’t know’. And, with time and confidence, those utterances should get longer and more developed.
Encourage engagement
Lastly, always encourage students to share anything of relevance during the lesson. Maybe they remember a story similar to the one in the video? Perhaps there is a thought on the topic they want to share? This is especially useful if you teach one-on-one. After all, no one has ever learned to communicate in a language just by listening to it!
So, use these tips and show your A2 students how fun learning English with ESL Brains can be! You’ve got this!
