LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• discuss family from various perspectives;
• learn and practise family and appearance vocabulary;
• work with family trees.

In this lesson, students talk about family, share their views on royal families and work with the British royal family tree. They review words for family members (e.g. wife, aunt, cousin), discuss people in their family and practise vocabulary for describing appearance (e.g. dark hair, tall, moustache). Students also work in pairs writing, reading and guessing descriptions of people.

WARM-UP AND FAMILY TREES

This lesson focuses on family and appearance vocabulary and starts with a warm-up. Students read sentences that describe the word family (e.g. They often eat meals together.) and guess what the word is. After that, they read the sentences from the previous task again and say if they are true for their family. Students explain further. Next, they choose an option to complete statements about royal families and give details. Moving on, students look at the British royal family tree. They choose the correct words (e.g. father, son, wife) to complete sentences about them. Afterwards, students examine the family-related words from the previous exercise and write them in the correct column (MALE and FEMALE) in a table. Following that, they choose members of their family and talk about them, saying their name, their age and where they live.

APPEARANCE AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students review family and appearance vocabulary and work in pairs with Family Tree cards. Student A asks questions about the family using the one name on their card. Student B, who has all the names, provides the information. They then switch roles. After that, students look at pictures of people from the British royal family. They complete descriptions of their appearance with their names. Next, students read the text from the previous task again to check words for appearance. They then use words to label pictures (e.g. red hair, short hair, glasses). Moving on, students look at photos of members of royal families. They choose four people and describe them using the words from the previous exercise. Finally, students choose people from a photo and write descriptions. Then, they take turns reading their descriptions so that their partner can guess the person.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students unscramble words about appearance in a family description. They then read the text and find the people described in a picture. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
