What Burning Man can teach you

NEWS SUMMARY

Burning Man began in 1986 and is now a week-long event in Nevada where participants build a temporary city filled with art, performances and community projects. On September 1, the city is dismantled and disappears completely. It’s an unusual experience because participants must survive for several days with people they’ve never met, surrounded by art, dust and the challenge of being self-reliant in the desert. The event is guided by a set of principles, including radical self-expression, gifting and leaving no trace. Radical self-expression is at the heart of Burning Man: it encourages participants to be bold and authentic, using creativity to explore themselves and connect with others. By living these principles, burners (people who attend Burning Man) learn to collaborate, care for the environment and take part fully in a community – lessons that can inspire us even outside the desert.
