NEWS SUMMARY
December has brought both record heat and record cold to Australia. The western part of the continent is experiencing intense heat, between 8 and 10ºC (14 and 18ºF) above average. The city of Perth has recorded the hottest start to December on record at 39ºC (102ºF). Meanwhile, the south-east of the continent is experiencing extreme cold and snowfall, with the temperatures dropping as much as 15ºC (27ºF) below average. The extremes are not expected to last for long.
