NEWS SUMMARY
Some of the 19th-century French crown jewels were stolen from the Louvre Museum in broad daylight. The thieves used a basket lift to reach a window, cut through it, entered the gallery and smashed several display cases. They took eight priceless items, including diadems, necklaces, brooches and earrings but dropped the ninth item, a crown, while fleeing the scene.
Officials at the Louvre had previously urged the French government to renovate the museum and strengthen its security. The Louvre is the most visited museum in the world and houses thousands of works of art, including the Mona Lisa.
