NEWS SUMMARY

Scientists have discovered a new dinosaur species called Istiorachis macarthurae. The species, which was named after a famous sailor, lived around 120 million years ago in what is now the Isle of Wight (the UK). It weighed about one tonne and had a sail-like structure along its back. Dr. Jeremy Lockwood, the lead palaeontologist on the paper describing the new species, believes that the sail evolved through sexual selection, just like long tails of peacocks.

The Isle of Wight was home to many other dinosaur species. Scientists expect to discover even more dinosaur species that once lived in the area.
