NEWS SUMMARY
Peñico, an ancient city north of Peru’s capital Lima, has been opened to the public after eight years of excavation and conservation. The urban centre was founded around 1800 BC. Its strategic location connected areas by the coast with the Andes Mountains and the Amazon River. Among the 18 structures identified at Peñico are public buildings and residential units. Archaeologists have also found clay sculptures, ceremonial tools and musical instruments. The site is now open for tourists.
