WARM-UP AND DISCUSSION

This ESL lesson on delivery services starts with a warm-up. Students look at the photos of a snail and a letter envelope. They use them to guess the term ‘snail mail and discuss this name. After that, students examine the photo of the envelope again and choose the correct words to complete statements about mailing (e.g. an envelope, return address, postcode). They then answer some questions about sending letters. Moving on, students think about the last time they sent or received different items (e.g. love letters, pen pal letters, marketing materials) by traditional post and give details. Following that, they choose one item that is better to send by traditional post rather than in digital form and explain why

VIDEO AND VOCABULARY PRACTICE

In this part of this ESL lesson on delivery services, students watch a video about Denmark’s postal service and choose the correct summary. After that, they read sentences about postal trends and statistics and complete gaps with numbers. Then, students watch the video again and check their answers. Moving on, they discuss digital and physical delivery trends. Afterwards, students look at sentences and match adjectives (e.g. padded, damaged, valuable) to their definitions. They then say what each person is sending and explain their idea. Following that, students use the words from the previous exercise to complete statements involving postal service mishaps. Next, they look at the situations from the previous exercise again, share experiences and suggest solutions. Finally, students choose one idea (e.g. a thank-you note) and write a story about a delivery failure. They describe the consequences and the solution. Students use the target words from the lesson.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson on delivery services also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students unscramble letters to create words in sentences. They then choose three sentences and add one more to each, using the target vocabulary from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
