LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- engage in discussing social media;
- practise words and phrases related to social networks;
- watch a video about a viral TikTok moment.
Students talk about social media and the habits connected to it, explore vocabulary to discuss its influence (e.g. misinformation, viral, addicted) and share opinions on its real-world effects. They watch a video about a viral TikTok that helped a writer make his book a bestseller and discuss examples of online content making an impact. Students also read short texts about social media stories and express their views.

WARM-UP AND DISCUSSION
This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students discuss questions on social media usage habits. After that, they match headlines about different social media use (Online health advice, The return of a popular movement) with their texts. Students notice vocabulary for discussing social media (e.g. inspire, influence, mental health). Moving on, they choose topics related to social media (a celebrity who experienced online bullying, an ad or a video that went viral) and talk about them in detail.
VIDEO AND MORE DISCUSSION
In this part of the lesson, they watch a video. Before they do, students look at words and phrases (TikTok, writer, influencer and her daughter) and say what the video might be about. Next, they watch the video about how a viral TikTok video transformed a struggling book into a bestseller. Students say what happened. They then engage in discussing social media and its effects. Finally, students read stories about different real-world impacts that social media can have. They discuss questions about each of them.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps in questions on social media’s impacts and related issues. They use words for discussing social media. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
