LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • engage in discussing AI chatbots;
  • learn and practise AI-related vocabulary;
  • watch a video on what AI chatbots are.

With this lesson, students talk about AI in everyday life, watch a video about AI chatbots and explore their strengths and limitations. They share personal experiences and discuss AI chatbots use. Students also review vocabulary related to AI (e.g. input, response, data), discuss their opinions and write responses from an AI chatbot using the target words from the lesson.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students rate common uses of AI (e.g. helping a user write an email) in order from most useful to least useful. They explain their reasons. After that, students engage in discussing AI chatbots and think of examples for points related to them (e.g. a place online where you might find an AI chatbot). They then watch the first part of a video about what AI chatbots are and check their ideas. Moving on, students watch the second part of the video and say which points about the strengths and limitations of AI tools are mentioned (e.g. They don’t understand human emotions). Afterwards, they think about their experience with AI chatbots and say which statements from the previous task they agree with and which ones they disagree with. Students give details.

VOCABULARY AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students discuss questions about being cautious and aware when using AI chatbots. Next, they match words for discussing AI chatbots (e.g. input, data, response) with the most appropriate definitions. Following that, students choose the correct option to complete unfinished statements (e.g. I shared my personal data/interface with a bot and…). Then, they finish three statements so that they are true for them. After that, students discuss questions about AI in customer service. Finally, they read lines from customers of an online shoe shop (e.g. Could you recommend some sports shoes for me?). Students then write possible responses from the AI customer support chatbot using the words from the lesson.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete a text with words for discussing AI chatbots. They then decide what the text is about. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

How can I edit an e-lesson plan?

You can get your own editable copy of an e-lesson plan and make changes to it. To do so, either (1) make a copy of it on your Google Drive (preferable method) or (2) download it in a Powerpoint format (but formatting might be a bit off so we can’t guarantee that it will work well).
