LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • discuss clothing for various situations;
  • practise clothes vocabulary;
  • listen to a recording with outfit descriptions.

In this lesson, students talk about clothes for different scenarios, explore clothing vocabulary (e.g. leggings, blazer, cardigan) and explain why they think some clothes are more or less formal. They discuss their clothes, listen to a recording of people describing their outfits and work in pairs, playing a guessing game. Students also describe what people in photos are wearing.

Vocabulary LabUnlimited Plan

This is a Vocabulary Lab worksheet. With it, students are introduced to a set of vocabulary on a specific topic and practise it through controlled activities, speaking tasks and games. Learn more about it here.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students name things in different categories (e.g. items of clothing people wear on their feet). After that, they read short texts about outfits for various contexts. Students label pictures using clothes vocabulary (e.g. slippers, blazer, sandals) in them. They then put the words from the previous exercise in different categories (e.g. formal clothing) in a table and explain their choices. Moving on, they look at more clothing words (e.g. buttons, pocket, hood) and pictures and answer questions about the clothes they are wearing. Next, they match definitions of more pieces of clothing (cardigan, parka, blouse) with pictures from the first exercise. Afterwards, students examine sets of clothes (e.g. jacket, parka, blazer) and think of one item they have. They provide details about it using the target words from the lesson and other ideas.

GUESSING GAME AND LISTENING PRACTICE

In this part of the lesson, students use cards with clothes vocabulary and work in pairs. Student A provides one-word clues and Student B gets one guess after each clue to identify the card. After that, they look at various points (e.g. Halloween party guest, person going to a dinner party) and say what they think each person might be wearing. Moving on, students listen to a recording and put the people in order as they are described. There are no incorrect answers and they explain their choices. Then, in pairs, students look at pictures and say what the people in them are wearing. Student A mentions a detail, Student B continues with another detail, and so on. They continue until they have mentioned all the details.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students look at pictures and complete a description of one of them with clothes vocabulary. They then write similar descriptions for the other photos. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
