LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this beginner lesson on online communication are to:
- discuss online activities and virtual meetings;
- practise vocabulary for solving online tasks;
- watch a video on how to schedule a Zoom meeting.
In this lesson, students talk about communication tools and digital habits. They watch two excerpts from a video (00:00-00:51 and 01:54-02:22) about scheduling online meetings, explore vocabulary related to online tasks (e.g. install apps, share files, copy and paste the link) and share their experiences. Students practise phrases for giving help in virtual contexts (e.g. Ok, let me see…, Please…, You need to…), discuss online meetings and react to different situations using the target vocabulary. They also work on problem-solving in pairs.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO
This beginner lesson on online communication starts with a warm-up. Students look at a list of communication tools (e.g. Discord, Google Meet, Messenger). They then discuss questions about their use. Afterwards, students read sentences about digital habits. They match phrases for online tasks (e.g. share files, install apps, add a profile photo) with the correct pictures. Moving on, students review the previous sentences and choose the ones that are true for them. They add details. After that, students watch a video on how to schedule an online meeting. They watch the first part of the video and choose the correct option to complete a sentence about its topic. Next, students read the steps for scheduling a meeting and complete the gaps. Then, they watch the first part of the video again and check their answers. Following that, students watch the second part of the video and choose two activities that the speaker talks about.
USEFUL PHRASES AND DISCUSSION
In this part of the beginner lesson on online communication, students discuss questions about online meetings and workplace communication. After that, they match sentences and questions related to virtual meetings with the correct responses. The responses contain phrases for giving help (e.g. You need to…, Don’t worry, I will…, Please…). Moving on, students react to situations involving digital tasks in two different ways. They use phrases from the previous exercise and phrases for online tasks. Afterwards, students work in pairs. They choose a problem (e.g. I always forget my passwords) and give at least three responses using sentence beginnings. Then, students swap roles.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This beginner lesson on online communication also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps with words related to online tasks. They then say if the sentences are true for them. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
