beginner lesson on jobs

EXERCISE 7

EXERCISE 8&9

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this beginner lesson on jobs are to:

  • learn and practise the beginner vocabulary to talk about jobs;
  • talk about professions from various perspectives;
  • watch two fun videos on the topic of work.

With this lesson, students discuss their own professions and those of people they know. They work with vocabulary to talk about jobs (e.g. a teacher, an office worker, a blogger) and verbs to talk about work tasks (e.g. create, build, bring). Students explore things some workers could say, watch a funny excerpt from Friends and see part of a video where kids ask adults about their professions. They also discuss aspirations and job preferences.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This beginner lesson on jobs begins with a warm-up. Students say if they know someone in any of the listed professions (e.g. a teacher, an office worker, a blogger and a doctor). They give details about their work. Afterwards, students match verbs and nouns to create phrases (e.g. have meetings, help people, make videos). They then use some of the phrases to say what the people from the previous task do. Next, students use words and phrases to complete sentences about jobs and workplaces (e.g. He works in a small school.). Following that, they create similar sentences about themselves or someone they know. Then, students complete gaps in sentences about jobs and work environments with one missing word (e.g. They work in a supermarket; She works with computers.).

VIDEOS AND DISCUSSION

In this part of this beginner lesson on jobs, students match statements to professions in pictures based on who would say them (e.g. How short do you want me to cut it? hairdresser). They then look at the professions and say three things about each one. Students use the provided verbs in the task (e.g. sell, talk to, cook). Afterwards, they watch a funny excerpt from the American sitcom, Friends, and discuss questions about jobs and professions. Following that, students watch part of a video in which kids ask adults about their professions and say what the people do. Next, they watch it again and tick the sentences that are mentioned about the people in the video. Finally, students finish sentences about aspirations and job preferences with the target professions from the lesson or their own ideas. They also give details

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete sentences about work and hobbies with verbs. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
