LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- talk about slide presentations, give opinions and share experiences;
- watch a video about Canva, a creative tool for slides and visuals;
- practise sentence starters and basic presentation vocabulary.
In this lesson, students watch a video about a tool for presentations and designs, discuss their experiences with presentations and review vocabulary related to slide elements (e.g. slide number, title). They share opinions about what makes a bad slide presentation, learn sentence starters (e.g. The text explains…, There is some information about…) and describe slides. Students also create a slide about a familiar topic (e.g. my city, my favourite food, my hobby), using a tool they are familiar with.
WARM-UP AND DISCUSSION
This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students watch a video about Canva, an online design tool. They tick the situations in which they see people use it (e.g. for a lesson, in a work meeting, at a conference). Students then discuss questions about their experience with Canva and presentations. Afterwards, they look at basic presentation vocabulary (e.g. bullet points, chart, image) and label elements on a slide. Next, students complete the gaps in sentences about creating effective slides (e.g. Add a title at the top to say what the slide is about.) using the words from the previous task. Moving on, they look at pairs of situations involving slides (e.g. long text OR bright colours). Students choose which one is worse in a presentation and explain their choice.
DESCRIBING SLIDES
In this part of the lesson, students match sentence halves to describe a sales growth slide they saw earlier in the lesson (e.g. The chart shows how the sales of each product have grown). After that, they look at a slide about a fitness app. Students choose the correct option to complete sentences (e.g. On the right/left, you can see a chart with some numbers.). Following that, they put words in the right order to create presentation sentence starters (e.g. On the left, you can see…, The text under the chart explains…). Then, students look at a slide and complete sentence starters with their own ideas, using basic presentation vocabulary. Afterwards, they discuss giving and watching presentations. Finally, students create a slide about a familiar topic, using a tool they know or drawing it. They follow instructions and use the lesson’s sentence starters.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose the correct option to complete sentences that describe slides. They then say which title best matches the description they completed. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
