WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This advanced lesson on energy tech begins with a warm-up. Students say how they would define the term ‘energy security’. Following that, they look at a graph. Students analyze it and discuss questions about the graph data and its influence. Moving on, they choose the correct words and phrases (e.g. hinge on, overhaul, expediting) in questions about energy choices and their global impact. Afterwards, students discuss the questions from the previous exercise. Next, they watch a video about nuclear energy and tech giants. First, they read sentences (e.g. The reason tech giants are investing in nuclear energy is…) and try to guess their endings. Then, students watch part of the video (00:54–04:19) and complete the sentences.

VOCABULARY AND DISCUSSION

In this part of this advanced lesson on energy tech, students discuss the notion of big tech investing in nuclear energy using some points (e.g. innovation, ethical and social concerns, environment). After that, they complete statements expressing opinions on tech companies and energy. Students fill in the gaps with letters to form adjectives (e.g. ludicrous, pre-emptive, cumbersome). They use definitions as clues. After that, students choose three statements from the previous task and explain why they agree or don’t agree with them. Finally, they consider an idea from the video that giant tech companies have “a vision of the world based on AI”. Students explain what they think this vision might entail and discuss how energy security fits into this vision.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This advanced lesson on energy tech also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete a text with verbs. They then comment on the information in the text using the target adjectives from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

I’ve started this lesson with one of my learners and it’s really good. Only a slight problem on slide 11 though – the answer strikethrough line at the bottom of the page doesn’t line up with the options. 🙂

Can’t wait to finish this one though with my learners.
