| LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- learn and practise collocations related to Christmas;
- watch a video on things to do in London during Christmas;
- discuss holiday season activities.
With this lesson, students work on vocabulary related to the holiday season (e.g. host a family dinner, wrap presents, go carolling), read fun facts about Christmas around the world and discuss Christmas traditions and celebrations. They also watch a video about Christmas in London and share their opinions on Christmas activities.
WARM-UP AND COLLOCATIONS
This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students look at the title of the lesson and a picture of shades of green, red and gold. They guess what the lesson might be about and think of three words related to the topic. Afterwards, students look at pictures of Christmas activities and complete gaps with verbs to form collocations related to Christmas (e.g. wrap presents, decorate the tree, buy souvenirs, etc.). Next, they choose the correct words to create more collocations for the verbs (e.g. wrap a parcel, decorate a house, buy snacks, etc.). Following that, students read fun facts about Christmas around the world and correct wrong verbs in collocations. They then discuss questions about Christmas traditions and celebrations.
VIDEO AND DISCUSSION
At this point, students practise collocations related to Christmas. They look at a list of activities (e.g. go carolling, see a show, go ice-skating, etc.) and choose five they would like to do in London at Christmas. Then, students watch a video and tick the activities the speaker recommends. After that, they read sentences about the video and choose the right option. Next, students watch the video again and check their answers. Afterwards, they choose one option to finish sentences about the holiday season in London with their ideas. Following that, students match question halves about holiday season preferences and say which of the options they prefer (e.g. Which do you prefer: to light candles or a fire?). Finally, they read and guess what Christmas activities people are not happy about. Then, students choose one statement they agree with and one they disagree with and explain why.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students use the target phrases from the lesson to complete sentences. Then, they use three phrases to make similar sentences, explaining what they know about those activities (e.g. go carolling). The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

To address this, we’ve included activities such as Christmas facts from around the globe, along with questions and tasks that give students plenty of opportunities to share and discuss their own Christmas traditions.
