LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- engage in talking about style and clothing;
- explore vocabulary related to clothes;
- watch a commercial for a fashion brand.
This lesson allows students to practise vocabulary on clothing (e.g. casual, silk blouse, classic suit, etc.), discuss style and watch an advert for a clothing brand. They talk about their ideas on fashion, share their personal clothing preferences and work on vocabulary mind maps. Students also explore phrases to express preference (e.g. If I want to look…, I would never wear…, I’d go for…, etc.).

VIDEO AND VOCABULARY
This lesson starts with a warm-up where students watch an ad. They read ideas expressed in it (e.g. Be your true self.) and guess what it advertises. Then, students watch the video and check their ideas. After that, they guess what words are missing in statements from the video. Then, students watch it again to check their answers. Following that, they engage in talking about style and clothing and complete sentences (e.g. Fashion is all about…) with their own ideas. Students give details. Next, they discuss people’s clothing choices and preferences. Afterwards, students read answers to the questions and match them to the people in some pictures. Subsequently, they use the words from the answers (e.g. blouse, denim, comfortable, etc.) to complete mind maps with different categories (clothes, materials and other adjectives). Then, students add one more word to each category.
DISCUSSION AND MORE PRACTICE
At this point in the lesson, students join in talking about style and clothing and choose what to wear for different situations (e.g. a long flight, a job interview, a yoga class, etc.). They use the vocabulary in the mind maps from previous exercises. Following that, students choose the right words to complete gaps in statements about clothing choices for different occasions (e.g. I would/have never wear a suit to work.). Afterwards, they read the sentences again and change the items of clothing to make them true for them. Next, students discuss photos of different people and their style and personality, and describe what they’re wearing.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps with the correct words in dialogues between a stylist and a client. Then, they read the dialogues and use words in brackets to write the client’s answers. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
