WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This ESL lesson on energy production starts with a warm-up in which students read quotes about the topic, decide who the author of each of them is and explain their reasoning. Then, they say which comment they consider the most insightful and why. After that, students explore energy-related vocabulary. They read definitions of places and things (e.g. a device that converts sunlight into electricity) and use words (e.g. dam, fossil, fuels, etc.) to create two- and three-word phrases (e.g. hydroelectric dam, wind turbine, solar panel, etc.). Next, students say which of the places and things are present or used where they live. They also explain how they think the situation has changed over the years. Afterwards, students complete gaps in pairs of sentences about energy consumption with the correct form of the words provided (e.g. rely – reliance, relying, reliant). Then, they choose a statement from each pair and say to what extent they agree with it.

VIDEO AND DISCUSSION

In this part of this ESL lesson on energy production students look at graphs showing global electricity statistics and discuss questions about electricity production trends, sustainable energy and future changes. Then, they watch a video titled “How Australians Are Trading Solar Energy With Their Neighbors” and answer questions about it. After that, students look at comments about the video (e.g. It’s a great idea to get passive income.) and say which one matches their opinion and which one they disagree with most. They also provide some details.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete sentences using the correct form of words. Then, they choose three sentences and decide what happened next. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
