LESSON OVERVIEW
In this lesson students engage in a discussion about human relationships. They discover synonyms of the word important, watch a video and reflect on the future of face-to-face vs digital interaction. The video idea comes from one of subscribers, Natascha. Thank you! #yousuggestwecreate
WARM-UP & DISCUSSION
The warm-up activity starts with a word map. Students have to complete it with synonyms of the word important (e.g. crucial, essential). The first letters are provided and, after having guessed the adjectives, students put them into practice. They discuss five statements related to the impact of social media on human relationships. This task is followed by another speaking activity in which students express their thoughts on two quotes about the necessity of human interaction.
VIDEO & DISCUSSION
These introductory speaking tasks lead to the second part of the lesson which starts with a video. First, students watch the beginning and describe the dystopian future it presents. Next, they personalise the activity and talk to each other about how they would feel in a world without face-to-face interaction. Then, they focus on four questions and watch the second part of the video to find the answers. Finally, they make predictions about how the video might finish. The listening task is followed by another discussion during which students speculate about the future of human interaction and the impact of the digital world on our wellbeing. Encourage them to use the synonyms of the word important when discussing and expressing their views.
Bravo!
Brilliant lesson!
You guys always pick such captivating topics! Thank you for your work!
Thank you! Enjoy😊
This lesson is outstanding!
I am very happy and proud to see this lesson here! This is amazing not only for the content but also for the representation! It is so rare to see videos where I can show to my students especially because 80% of them are Black!!! I will show it to all of them!!! Hope I can see here more lessons like this! Thank you!!!!
I think showcasing the diversity of the humankind and showing the whole spectrum of the world (in terms of ELT, that also includes variety of native and non-native accents) is something that teachers ought to do because the world is simply not monochromatic. I wish we were better at it and I want to have more such materials on ESL Brains. BTW we didn’t use this video because the actors are Black but because it’s an interesting short film 🙂
Fantastic! Thanks a lot!!
That is an incredible lesson! I’m sure my students will have a lot of speaking practice. Thank you!
Thanks and good luck with your classes!
Great! Thank you =)
Amazing! It really involved my teenage students though it is not easy!!!

I’m happy you find it useful! Thanks for the comment!
My students absolutely loved this lesson. It was so effective and created nice discussion. Thanks from NZ!
Awesome, I’m thrilled to hear that 🙂 Thanks for the comment!
perfect!!!!
This video made me cry actually, because I hope university auditoriums never become empty like that but I was touched by the effect that the student had on the professor. (obviously, it was the idea behind the video). This lesson will be useful for many years to come and there are some great discussion questions to use to talk about this topic. Thank you!
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I hope the video and the worksheet itself will engage students and make them reflect on the future of face-to-face interaction.
Thank you!!!
Excellent lesson and very interesting video document choice, thanks a lot!
Thanks! We’re happy you like it 🙂
