LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • build vocabulary and practise useful phrases with ‘as‘ in different contexts;
  • learn grammatical aspects of ‘as’ and have practice; 
  • discuss and think of possible solutions for environmental issues.

In this lesson, students think about the ocean, explore useful phrases with ‘as(e.g. as much as, as if, as long as, etc.), engage in conversations, brainstorm potential solutions for environmental challenges and learn different ways of using ‘as’. Students also watch a short video, do a role play and rewrite short texts.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

The lesson starts with a warm-up in which students share their associations with the word ‘ocean’ and compare them to the picture of polluted water. After that, they complete the statements by choosing the correct phrase with ‘as’. Then, students have some practice and create one additional sentence to statements using phrases with ‘as’ (e.g. as is, as a matter of fact, as though, etc.).

VIDEO AND ROLE PLAY

In this part of the lesson, students prepare to watch a short video about the Coral Restoration Foundation. First, they read a quote from the video and discuss questions about coral reefs. Next, they read a short explanation and share what they think organizations might be doing to help save coral reefs. After that, students practise their listening and interpretation skills by watching the video and answering some questions. Then, in pairs, students engage in a role play where they practise useful phrases with ‘as’ and brainstorm ideas to help save the ocean, resolving differences to agree on one idea based on the conditions they find in their cards.

MORE USES OF ‘AS’

In the last part of this lesson, students focus on the grammatical aspects of ‘as’. First, they rewrite a sentence from the video by replacing ‘as’ with other words. After that, students study different ways of using ‘as’, read some sentences and choose one of the meanings for ‘as’ in each of them (because, when/at the same time, in the way that). Then, they read short texts on different topics and rewrite them using two useful phrases with ‘as’ and ‘as’ in two different meanings. Afterwards, students answer questions about recycling, technology and volunteering using ‘as’ at least three times.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson includes an additional task that teachers can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete the text with missing ‘as’ and discuss tips on children’s upbringing and the environment. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
