LESSON OVERVIEW

In this ESL worksheet about architecture, students watch a video about a hospital of the future, learn advanced vocabulary related to architecture and talk about architecture of the future. 

WARM-UP & VOCABULARY

The ESL worksheet about architecture starts with a warm-up task in which students discuss some questions about four images. The images are of futuristic buildings with different features. Then, students need to do a multiple choice activity and choose correct words for sentences (e.g. high-rise, adaptable, scaled). After that, they have to create collocations with the words from the sentences (e.g. an array of materials, be comprised of modules, accommodate an event). They also have a short discussion about the architectural features described with the use of collocations. For instance, they need to say which features are common in architecture, which of them might be implemented in the near future and which sound too far-fetched. 

VIDEO & DISCUSSION

Before watching the video, students discuss how features like ‘modular’, ‘sustainable’ or ‘biophilic design’ might be related to the design of hospitals of the future. Then, they watch the video and compare their ideas. They also discuss questions about the video. After that, students share their views on how certain items might be affected by architectural features discussed in the video. In this task, students can choose to talk about farming, hotels, entertainment, schools and learning, etc. In the last task of this ESL worksheet about architecture, students need to choose a quote which best reflects the lesson’s discussion. They also have to explain their choice. 

HOMEWORK/REVISION

The ESL worksheet about architecture includes a supplementary vocabulary task to practise the lexis from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet and can be printed. It can also be accessed in the e-lesson plan for online teaching.
