WARM-UP & VOCABULARY

In the warm-up task to this ESL lesson about AI, students look at three situations and list three things they would need to do in each of them. Then, they match halves to create sentences with the target vocabulary (e.g. figure out how to, give expert advice, provide useful information). Students also need to decide which professions the sentences describe. After that, students complete some sentences with their own ideas to practise the collocations from the previous task. Finally, students discuss what they would do in certain situations. Those include questions about hiring a fitness coach, a tutor or a travel agent.

VIDEO & DISCUSSION

In the second part of this ESL lesson about AI, students read a short text about ChatGPT and share their experience with using it. They also look at some statements and decide which of them might be true for ChatGPT. Then, they watch the video and check their answers. Before the second viewing, students look at six statements from the video and try to guess what words are missing in each gap. Then, they watch the video for the second time and check their answers. Next, students have a discussion about ChatGPT. They talk about how it could help them with different tasks and what they would like to ask it to do. At this point the teacher can choose to do an extra task which involves using ChatGPT by students. The task is provided in the teacher’s version of the worksheet, as well as in the e-lesson plan. Students need to come up with some prompts, talk to ChatGPT and share their experiences. In the final task of this ESL lesson about AI, students read some statements about ChatGPT and AI in general. They need to choose one sentence from each category that they agree with most. They also need to explain their choice

HOMEWORK/REVISION

The ESL lesson about AI includes a supplementary vocabulary task to practise the vocabulary from the lesson. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet and can be printed for students or accessed in the e-lesson plan for online teaching. An optional homework assignment is also provided.

Very timely topic. Looking forward to using it. The speaker in the video speaks fast for my B1(ish) students but it’ll be okay.

Thanks! If the speaker is too fast for your students, you can always slow the video down (there is a teacher note in the lesson explaining how to do it).

How can I edit an e-lesson plan?

You can get your own editable copy of an e-lesson plan and make changes to it. To do so, either (1) make a copy of it on your Google Drive (preferable method) or (2) download it in a Powerpoint format (but formatting might be a bit off so we can’t guarantee that it will work well).
