How to be happy

LESSON OVERVIEW

In this lesson, students watch a video and learn how to use reflexive pronouns. They also talk about happiness. 

WARM-UP & VIDEO

At the beginning of the lesson, students look at a picture with five faces and decide which one best shows how they are feeling. They also discuss some questions about being happy. Before watching the video, students look at some advice people in the video give to their younger self and guess what words are missing. Then, they watch the video and check their answers. The speakers in the video use reflexive pronouns which students will practise in the second part of the lesson. While watching the video for the second time, students note down three pieces of advice not mentioned in the previous task. After that, students share their views on the advice from the video and add their own advice to the list. 

REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

In this part of the lesson, students look at eight situations and choose a correct reflexive pronoun in each of them. They also choose a situation or two that they relate to and give some details. Then, they do a task which will help them understand when and how to use reflexive pronouns. For example, they need to decide what the difference between two statements is: one with yourself and one with yourselves. After that, students look at a list of advice on how to be happy. They need to add the word yourself to five of them. Finally, students choose three pieces of advice that they think are the most useful and explain why it is sometimes difficult to follow them. 

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This worksheet includes an additional task to practise reflexive pronouns that you can use as homework or revision. It’s available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it, cut it up and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan, if you teach online.
