LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- engage in discussing AI and jobs;
- practise key phrases for impact and change;
- watch a video on how AI is changing jobs.
In this lesson, students reflect on the uses of AI at work and in daily life, read quotes with different views on AI and watch a video about AIās impact on jobs. They debate AI replacing professions (e.g. digital marketers, software coders), share their opinions and read comments on AIās influence on jobs. Students explore phrases related to impact and change (e.g. rely on, contribute to, take responsibility for), write their views on AIās effect on professions and work in pairs, discussing their thoughts. They also talk about the possible outcomes of job replacements.Ā
WARM-UP AND VIDEO
This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students list ways people use AI at work and in their personal lives. After that, they read quotes with different views on AI and work. Students say which one they agree with the most and explain why. Following that, they watch a video discussing AI and jobs. Students complete a table with the tasks AI is likely to take over and skills and tasks AI is not likely to learn. Moving on, they discuss reasons why AI could replace some professions (e.g. accountants, data scientists, medical staff). Then, students watch the second part of the video, compare it with their ideas and write down the reasons provided for some of the professions. Afterwards, they discuss opinions about AI and jobs.Ā
USEFUL VOCABULARY AND DISCUSSION
In this part of the lesson, students read contrasting views on AIās impact on jobs. They match expressions for discussing AI and jobs (e.g. adapt to, pose a threat to, carry out tasks) with their definitions. They then discuss which view they agree with the most and why. After that, students choose two professions (e.g. paramedic, fitness trainer, artist) and write a short opinion about them. They consider points related to AIās impact on professions and use the phrases from the previous exercise. Moving on, students work in pairs, listening to their partnerās opinions from the previous task. They respond by agreeing or disagreeing and explaining why. Then, students swap roles. Finally, they choose two professions (e.g. photographer, therapist, teacher) and imagine AI has replaced them. Students say what the outcomes of the replacement could be, considering social and economic impacts.
HOMEWORK/REVISION
This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete the gaps in questions with phrases for discussing AI and jobs. They then choose three questions and answer them.Ā The task is available in the teacherās version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. Itās also included in the e-lesson plan.
