They’re wearing… (talking about people in photos)

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• engage in discussing and describing people in photos;
• practise clothing vocabulary and useful verbs;
• watch an ad and talk about the people in it.

Students find photos that represent sentences (e.g. a person is walking), explore clothing vocabulary (e.g. shirt, watch, glasses) and play ‘Two truths and a lie’ in pairs. They also practise the correct use of ‘carry’, ‘hold’ and ‘wear’, describe people in photos and work with an ad for a coffee brand. 

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students look at sentences (e.g. a person is smiling) and, on their phone, find a photo that matches them. After that, they look at pairs of clothing pieces (e.g. suit and scarf). Students use the correct words to complete statements about what people wear and why (e.g. When you’re cold, wear a jumper). Moving on, they work in pairs and play a game called ‘Two truths and a lie’. Students write three sentences about their clothes, including one lie. They use the words from the previous task. Students then take turns reading their sentences to each other and their partner says which one is a lie. Afterwards, they engage in describing people in photos by saying what they are wearing. Following that, students complete sentences about the people in the photos from the previous exercise, using ‘wear’, ‘carry’ and ‘hold’ correctly.

VOCABULARY PRACTICE AND VIDEO

In this part of the lesson, students examine photos and complete the gaps in sentences with the words ‘wearing’, ‘carrying’ or ‘holding’ (e.g. they’re wearing earrings). After that, they look at the photos from the previous task again and say one more thing about each person, using the words ‘wear’, ‘hold’ or ‘carry’. Next, students watch an ad. First, they examine its slogan and guess what it might be for. Then, students watch the video and check. Moving on, they complete sentences about the video by choosing words. Afterwards, students watch the video again and check their answers. Finally, students work in pairs, describing people in photos. They look at the photos, choose one and tell their partner two things about the people in it. Their partner will listen and once they have finished, they will add other details. Students then swap roles and discuss all the photos.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students create some sentences describing people in photos. They use ‘carrying’, ‘holding’, ‘wearing’ and other verbs. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
