LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this lesson are to:
- read an article about Uber accepting cash;
- talk about different payment methods;
- practise key vocabulary for payments.
In this CRC lesson, students discuss questions involving cash, review useful phrases related to payment methods (e.g. digital wallet, loose change, money transfer) and talk about the article they read at home. They share their thoughts on cash and digital payments, describe and compare ways of paying in everyday situations and reflect on changes in payment habits.
This is a Critical Reading Club worksheet. With this format, students need to read an online article at home and do the exercises in the classroom. Learn more about how to use such worksheets and their benefits in our post.
ACTIVITIES
This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students complete questions with the word ‘cash’ (e.g. Do you have any cash on you?). They then answer the questions. Moving on, students use key language (e.g. bank account, loose change, digital wallet) to complete statements about ways to pay. Afterwards, they say what the article they read at home was about using some phrases (e.g. new payment method, in the Uber app, drivers). Following that, students discuss questions about types of payment and attitudes to cash. Next, they do tasks where they compare and choose payment methods for different situations and people. Then, students look at situations related to changes in how people pay for goods and services (e.g. your country decides to stop using cash altogether). They discuss how likely those situations are and their impact on them and others.
