LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• talk about places around town, give opinions and share experiences;
• practise vocabulary for places in town;
• work on the pronunciation of some sounds.

With this lesson, students talk about where they live, explore the names of places (e.g. police station, post office, beauty salon) and share opinions on locations in various contexts. They explore the pronunciation of some sounds (/æ/, /ɑː/ and /eɪ/), work in pairs and guess words. Students also discuss choices for different places and put places on a map according to people’s needs (e.g. a group of students with a dog).

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students discuss whether they live in a village or a city and what they like and dislike about it. Afterwards, they read sentences related to everyday tasks (e.g. I need to take my parcel to the post office today) and practise vocabulary for places in town. Students use the words and phrases for places to label pictures. Moving on, they use the vocabulary from the previous task to discuss questions about local places and preferences. Following that, students use words to complete more names of places (e.g. sports field, vet clinic, cash machine). Next, they complete sentences (e.g. before a date, I will go to…) with the names of places from the previous exercise and give reasons. After that, students sort words by sounds (/æ/, /ɑː/ and /eɪ/) and practise their pronunciation. 

VOCABULARY PRACTICE AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students work in pairs. They take a card with a place (e.g. butcher’s, bowling alley, barber shop). Student A says words connected with the place for Student B to guess. They swap roles and continue until they’ve used all the cards. Moving on, students return to pair work and practice vocabulary for places in town. They examine opinions (e.g. I wouldn’t like to live near a garage/butcher’s). Student A chooses an option for each sentence and explains their choice. Student B gives reasons why someone might choose the other option. They switch roles and discuss all the sentences. Finally, students look at a map and imagine people (e.g. a family with two school children) are moving into a new house. They say which places (e.g. art gallery, bakery, post office) those people would like to have in different spots on the map.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps in sentences to create vocabulary for places in town. They then choose statements they agree with and statements they disagree with. Students explain their choice. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
