LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

• practise will and going to in positive, negative and question forms;
• talk about work situations and share planning experiences;
• watch a humorous video on appearing busy at work.

In this lesson, students practise the use of Future Simple and going to. They discuss office work tasks and watch a short video about how to look busy at work. Students share ideas about workload and productivity, talk about work situations and explore short dialogues. They also learn the rules for using will and going to, discuss their future work plans and talk about their experiences and plans in different situations.

WARM-UP AND GRAMMAR

This lesson allows students to practise will and going to and starts with a warm-up. They look at office work tasks (e.g. completing documents, making phone calls) and discuss how they feel about them. Students explain their answers. They then watch a video about how to look busy at work. First, students think of ways to seem busy at work. After that, they watch the video and check if any of their answers are in it. Afterwards, students discuss questions about workload and productivity. Moving on, they read questions related to work situations and choose an answer for each. Students explain why. Following that, they look at phrases from the previous task (e.g. I’m going to leave…, I’ll help…) and complete rules and a table with positive, negative and question forms.

GRAMMAR PRACTICE AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students read sentences about different situations. They choose the correct option for future situations. Moving on, students practise will and going to by completing sentences with the correct forms in dialogues. Afterwards, they work in pairs. Students talk about the next time they are going to do different things (e.g. talk to your boss, start a new project, travel for work). Finally, they look at pairs of contrasting situations (e.g. I feel more confident when I plan my tasks OR I feel stressed when I plan all my tasks). Students choose the statement that is true for them and give some details.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students read situations and make dialogues, using will and going to. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
