ESL lesson on real estate

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this ESL lesson on real estate are to:

  • discuss real estate trends, property issues and housing policies;
  • practise words related to real estate and property deals;
  • watch a trailer for a show about real estate.

With this lesson, students talk about real estate and housing trends. They read statistics about property in the UK and compare them to where they live. Students learn and practise words that can be both nouns and verbs (e.g. bid, broker, commission) and share their ideas about property issues and agreements. They watch a trailer for a real estate reality show and discuss luxury housing and selling expensive properties. Students also express their opinions about housing policies.

WARM-UP AND VOCABULARY

This ESL lesson on real estate starts with a warm-up. Students discuss a quote about real estate. After that, they read some statistics on property trends in the UK. Students choose the figure they think is correct in each statement. They then say if they have noticed similar trends where they live. Moving on, students discuss questions about real estate and property agreements. Afterwards, they read pairs of sentences about real estate deals and transactions. Students complete them by choosing words used as nouns in one sentence and verbs in the other (e.g. flip, lead, lease). Next, they discuss questions about how real estate works.

VIDEO AND DISCUSSION

In this part of this ESL lesson on real estate, students watch a trailer for a reality TV series about luxury real estate, Buying London. They then read statements and choose the one which best summarises the video. Afterwards, students discuss questions about luxury real estate and selling high-end property. Moving on, they choose an option in statements about housing policies and property issues (e.g. Tenants need more/fewer rights and protections…). Next, students complete the statements with their own ideas.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This ESL lesson on real estate also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete missing words in sentences about real estate challenges and experiences. The first letters are provided. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
