LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this beginner lesson on learning English are to:

  • talk about strategies to learn English;
  • review vocabulary to discuss language learning activities;
  • read a short text about a person trying to learn English.

Students talk about learning English in their country. They discuss why people learn English and share which English skills matter most to them. Students practise key phrases for language learning strategies (e.g. write down new words, chat with people) and explore a short text about a learner’s story. They also discuss English learning strategies and challenges, explore ideas and suggest learning activities

WARM-UP AND DISCUSSION

This beginner lesson on learning English begins with a warm-up. Students discuss questions about the English language and education in their country. After that, they complete sentences about learning English (e.g. I learn English because I want to…; My friend learns English because…) with the ideas in pictures showing different things (e.g. a film, a book, two people talking). Moving on, students look at pairs of English skills (e.g. reading a short article OR writing an email) and say which of them is more important to them. They explain why

VOCABULARY AND MORE DISCUSSION

In this part of this beginner lesson on learning English, students complete sentences about strategies for English learning. They use key phrases under pictures (e.g. write down new words, use an app). Following that, students use the sentences from the previous task to complete gaps in a text about Marco’s English learning journey. Afterwards, they decide if statements about the text are true or false. Students correct the false ones. Next, they discuss questions about English learning strategies and challenges. After that, students explore English learning ideas (e.g. listen to a podcast in English), reflect on learning activities and suggest new ones.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete words in a text. They then say what job the person in the text does. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
