phrases for clarification

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • discuss communication issues and how to clarify information;
  • practise phrases for clarification;
  • watch a video about a communication issue.

Students talk about communication challenges and learn and practise phrases for clarifying and checking meaning. They explore common communication problems and discuss effective ways to address them. Students listen to dialogues in different places, identify useful phrases and practise using them in short role-plays.  They create their questions and responses and take turns acting out situations where they fix communication problems.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson on phrases for clarification starts with a warm-up. Students look at points related to communication challenges (e.g. People don’t understand each other because they speak different first languages) and think of when each situation could happen. After that, they discuss more questions about communication. Moving on, students use words (e.g. accent, connection, noise) to complete gaps in pairs of sentences about understanding at work (e.g. Your colleague speaks very fast and you can’t understand them. (vs.) Your colleague speaks with a strong accent and it’s hard for you to understand.). Following that, they watch a video and say which problem from the previous task it is about. Students say what idea the speakers had to fix it. Next, they look at the situations again. In each pair, students choose the situation that they think is easier to deal with. They say what they would do.

DISCUSSION AND ROLE-PLAY

In this part of the lesson, students discuss questions about making work communication clearer. After that, they listen to a recording of dialogues in different situations (at work, at a train station and in the street) and say where each of them happens. Afterwards, students read the transcript of the dialogues from the recording. They find phrases for clarification (e.g. The speaker wants to check if they understood something correctly – So, we need to … Is that right?). Moving on, students choose the correct phrase (e.g. I’m sorry, can you repeat the last part?) to complete more dialogues. Next, they use words (e.g. could, again) to help them create questions or responses in other dialogues. Finally, students role-play communication problems in pairs and practise phrases for clarification

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete phrases for clarification in sentences. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.
