advanced vocabulary for discussing luxury

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • talk about views on luxury markets and services;
  • watch a video featuring a consumer behaviour psychologist;
  • practise advanced vocabulary for discussing luxury.

Students discuss luxury products and experiences. They explore advanced adjectives (e.g. bespoke, distinctive, exclusive) to describe people and situations. Students watch a video about speaking to the luxury market, review elevated alternatives to words (e.g. paperwork, initial investment, areas of concern) and share their thoughts and opinions. They also work on identifying synonyms, reflect on luxury sales and consumer choices and create a sales pitch using elevated language.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students think of examples for different categories (luxury products, luxury experiences, luxury brands). After that, they explain what they think the statement ‘In luxury, every detail matters’ means. They then watch the first part of a video featuring a consumer behaviour psychologist and say what detail he focuses on. Moving on, students watch the second part of the video. They complete the table with the information from the video, featuring alternatives to words (e.g. price investment) and the reasons why they elevate language. Afterwards, students practice advanced vocabulary for discussing luxury and discuss questions about how language influences luxury sales and consumer choices. Next, they think of elevated alternatives for words and phrases in sentences (e.g. Our team is here to help you. assist).

VOCABULARY AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students practise advanced vocabulary for discussing luxury. They read descriptions of luxurious products and services and match advanced adjectives (e.g. bespoke, distinctive, exclusive) with their synonyms. Afterwards, students come up with real-life examples for the descriptions from the previous task. Moving on, they finish sentences about luxury products and experiences. Students use elevated language to convey a sense of luxury, as suggested in the video. Following that, they discuss questions about luxury brand strategies and challenges. Finally, students choose one luxury item (e.g. wellness retreat, diamond ring, leather briefcase) and create a sales pitch using elevated language (e.g. exquisite, meticulous, seamless).

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students complete gaps with advanced vocabulary for discussing luxury. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

    very nice material! I can see it working very well for a CAE class – for those students who struggle with using basic expressions and need to ‘elevate’ their vocabulary.
    One tine detail: on slide 21: products that are bespoke to meet each client’s unique preferences bespoke
    – there is one extra ‘bespoke’ in the description
