Grammar - Present Continuous

practise Present Continuous

LESSON OVERVIEW

The main objectives of this lesson are to:

  • learn and practise Present Continuous;
  • discuss games from various perspectives;
  • watch an excerpt from a sitcom featuring a game night.

With this lesson, students talk about different kinds of games and share their favourite ones. They read short texts about three guessing games, watch part of a video (around one minute) about a game night and explore the Present Continuous tense. They create and answer questions about game activities using question words. Students also play a guessing game based on photos by describing what people are or aren’t doing.

WARM-UP AND VIDEO

This lesson starts with a warm-up. Students discuss questions about the games they enjoy and the kinds they prefer. Afterwards, they read short descriptions of three guessing games (Charades, Pictionary and Hangman). Students then answer questions about their experiences and preferences. Moving on, they watch part of a video about a game night. Students say which game from the previous task the people are playing. Following that, they rewatch the same part of the video and answer questions about the way people play the game. Next, students watch a short part of the video again and practise Present Continuous by completing a sentence.

PRESENT CONTINUOUS AND DISCUSSION

In this part of the lesson, students do tasks where they explore the use, rules and structure of the Present Continuous tense. After that, they complete gaps in statements about games. Students use the correct Present Continuous form of the verbs (e.g. I am smiling because I like this game). Moving on, they work in pairs and practise Present Continuous more. Students look at game-related photos and write questions using ‘Who’, ‘What’, ‘Where’, or ‘Why’. They then take turns asking and answering each other’s questions. Next, students look at more photos involving games. They choose one of them and make sentences about what people are not doing in it. Their partner listens and guesses which photo they are talking about. If they’re unsure, they can ask questions to find out more.

HOMEWORK/REVISION

This lesson plan also includes an additional task that you can use as homework or revision. In the task, students choose two places (e.g. office, living room, garden) and use Present Continuous to make positive and negative sentences about what people are doing in these places. The task is available in the teacher’s version of the worksheet. You can print it and hand it out to your students. It’s also included in the e-lesson plan.

    Slide 22, letter C: I spotted a mistake. There it says “her team are guessing” and that’s inaccurate. It needs to be fixed. Student’s Version is correct.

      Hi! Thanks for spotting that! We’ve just changed ‘team’ to ‘teammates’ as in the Student’s Version.
