LESSON OVERVIEW
The main objectives of this advanced lesson on phrasal verbs are to:
- practise phrasal verbs in different situations;
- talk about interactions, changes, challenges and negotiations.
- watch a short comedic video.
With this lesson, students learn and use phrasal verbs related to soft skills and problem-solving. They discuss workplace attitudes and behaviors using phrasal verbs, identify and apply phrasal verbs related to business deals and talk about corporate change. Students also work with phrasal verbs about decisions and intentions, explore various situations and watch a video where people discuss a recipe.
SOFT SKILLS
In this activity, students look at some soft skills and choose the correct words to create phrasal verbs (e.g. iron out, bear with, size up). Then, they use them to describe past experiences in a job interview.TEAM PROJECTS
Students complete gaps with words to form phrasal verbs (e.g. settle for, come in for) in pairs of statements. They then discuss colleagues’ workplace attitudes, deciding which behaviors they find annoying, helpful, or inconsequential. Students explaining why.
MAKING A DEAL
In this task of this advanced lesson on phrasal verbs, students look at definitions and think of possible phrasal verbs (e.g. bargain on, go back on, hammer out). They then listen to a recording to identify them in context. Afterwards, they describe situations using the phrasal verbs from the dialogue.
TALKING ABOUT CHANGES
Students match sentence halves with phrasal verbs about business and corporate change. Afterwards, they complete gaps with one word to create phrasal verbs. They then continue the sentences with their ideas (e.g. Doing away with old traditions…).
TRIOS
In this activity, students complete trios of sentences about various situations with a phrasal verb (e.g. break up, take off, put off). The verbs might require different forms in each sentence.
MIXED PHRASAL VERBS
Students choose the correct phrase for sentences about decisions, intentions, and situations in daily life. They then complete sentences containing phrasal verbs with their own ideas (e.g. It dawned on me that…).
WORKING OUT THE MEANING OF PHRASAL VERBS
At this point in this advanced lesson on phrasal verbs, students watch a video and guess the meaning of ‘fold in’. Then, they explain other phrasal verbs (e.g. pan out, put out, while away) and match sentences to check their answers. Finally, students react to comments using the phrasal verbs.
