LESSON OVERVIEW
This lesson plan gives students the opportunity to learn and practise words related to freelance work and discuss pros and cons of the gig economy.
This is a Critical Reading Club worksheet. With this format, students need to read an online article at home and do the exercises in the classroom. Learn more about how to use such worksheets and their benefits in our post.
ACTIVITIES
As a warm-up, students read three definitions and decide which two refer to the word gig. They also need to come up with the word which the third definition refers to. Then, they look at eight words and phrases (e.g. independent contractor, payroll, poorly regulated) and establish which of them are related to gig work and in what way. After that, students read five sentences and explain some of the words and phrases in them (e.g. entrepreneur, insurance package, income) using the provided context. The lesson ends with a discussion about the gig economy. Students share their views on the working conditions of gig workers, decide what the reasons behind the success of the gig economy are, and give some ideas on how to regulate gig work.

Perfect lesson, my student did the reading beforehand as planed, I still started the lesson by having the student reading it over, allowing for pronunciation correction and vocabulary. My student did enjoy the lesson!
Thank you
